The Singing Men

(this is the view through which I saw the singing men - this photo is here only until I can get a picture, or better yet, a video of them)

For the past few nights I've been hearing this singing, groups of men, sounding kind of like songs they would sing at a soccer game. I commented it on the blog before.

Tonight I heard the singing again. This time it was louder than before. It sounded like it was right outside of my window.

I went out on to the balcony as I have before, to see if I could figure out where it was coming from. My guess was that there was some kind of sports pub down one of the little alleys that run into my little street. Each time I went out on to the balcony before though, it seemed like the sound got weaker. It was almost like I could hear it better from inside my apartment. I was beginning to think it was some mysterious Dutch ghost story or something.

Tonight when I stepped out on the balcony - which by the way really freaks me out because it looks like it is so high up from the street - I heard the singing. I was thinking that the sound was getting weaker as it had done before, but then I felt like I was getting a better sense of where the singing was coming from. I thought it was coming from an alley that came into my street from the left.

And then I saw them.

I've seen these boatloads of youngish guys, I'd say around college age, riding around in boats in the canal. They all look very clonish in their appearance. They all have longish, but not too long hair. They all have their hair kind of slicked back, but also kind of free. They all wear blue shirts and ties, some have jackets. They all look very preppy.

And they ride around the canals in their boats, some smoking cigarettes, some standing with others sitting. It's an odd, or shall I say, intriguing sight. I've been curious about them.

So tonight when I was standing on my balcony a group of the cloney, preppy guys went by. This time the boat was big and it was absolutely packed. And they were all singing.

  1. Lovely! Beautiful! It goes without saying that cheese and clogs go together. It is Holland after all. Just like Ementaler and chocolate in Switzerland. Looks like you are having a lot of fun. Now, I do want to put Holland on my traveling itinerary.
